Religious Education (RE)
Our RE Lead is Mrs Rogan.
RE plays an important role in preparing our pupils for adult life, employment and lifelong learning. Our pupils become successful learners, confident individuals and responsible citizens. RE makes an important contribution to our duty to promote community cohesion. It provides a key context to develop our pupils’ understanding and appreciation of diversity and to challenge racism and discrimination. The intention of our RE curriculum is to develop deep thinking through high-quality discussions. Our Our RE material ensures appropriate knowledge and skills progression from EYFS to KS2. RE begins in the EYFS, pupils in Reception learn about religions and worldviews through special people, books, times, places and objects. In addition they learn about current festivals and celebrations, such as Diwali and Eid. Children are introduced to subject specific words and use all their senses to explore beliefs, practices and forms of expression. They are encouraged to ask questions and reflect on their own feelings and experiences. They use their imagination and curiosity to develop their appreciation of and wonder at the world in which they live.
We develop the children’s knowledge, understanding, appreciation and respect of the six main world religions (Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Buddhism, Hinduism and Sikhism). We also teach about atheism and Humanism, as ¼ of British adults have ‘no religion’. Our RE curriculum supports our school community and teaches children about the multi-cultural society of today. Children reflect on what it means to have faith and to develop their own spiritual knowledge and understanding. We help the children learn from religions so that they can: describe, explain, analyse and investigate allowing them to appreciate beliefs and practices, recognising the diversity, meanings and values within and between communities (including their own) and amongst individuals. As so many of the skills we aim to foster in the children are thinking skills, we do not record our work in individual books. Instead, a class floor book is kept and has examples of the activities the children have taken part in throughout the year.
